With apologies to Eldridge Rodriguez: Apparently the layout of my post of Eldridge Rodriguez's new album, This Conspiracy Against Us, was the post that caused all the viewing problems in Internet Explorer.
So I deleted it.
But I also bought the album on iTunes and can highly recommend it. The album release party is on March 7 and Eldridge has said he'll be at my book release party the following night (it's been eight or nine years since I've seen him and I still can't get used to that name).

Crazy people: Interesting read on the Danvers State Hospital and other old building at Parlez Moi:
The building I worked in was a new, plain brick, institutional place but the old building was a long, serpentine, gothic structure that perched on top of the hill and looked about as malevolent as anything Stephen King or Shirley Jackson could have dreamed up. There were spires along the length of the building, tall barred windows and that brooding air of evil that those of us with a naturally romantic disposition like to project onto such places. At night when I left a guard would escort me to my car but I would always find a reason to turn around in the drives that surrounded the old building just to get a closer look and wonder about it. Reminds me of my trips to Dixmont State Hospital outside of Pittsburgh (photos).

R.I.P., R.I.P.: If you want to do your part to bolster the claims of blog critics that bloggers waste lots of time and bandwidth making idle comments about subjects they're not well versed in, do the obligatory R.I.P. post the next time a celebrity dies.
As in "R.I.P., James Brown" or "R.I.P., Gerald Ford."
 It's amazing how quickly my RSS reader filled up with "R.I.P., James Brown" posts on Christmas morning. There was no escape from it: in addition to bloggers I usually respect throwing up the post, I got five MySpace bulletins and even a damn email with the hackneyed subject line.
If you had sex, did drugs or performed with James Brown, then your post was probably worth reading (although it got lost in all the dull R.I.P. posts and you would have been better off getting to the point by bluntly titling it "I got busy/got high/performed with the Godfather of Soul"). Still, you have every right to write a post wishing Brown peaceful eternal rest. If you're a suburban white kid who heard a couple of James Brown standards at a frat party, you're not breaking news. You're cliché.
(Apologies to any friends or enemies reading this who may have done an R.I.P. post in the past few days, but c'mon: no one is really interested in your half-baked thoughts on Brown's influence on modern pop music. Follow the old "write what you know" axiom and tell us something interesting).

More on bad lingo: Gawker has a list of Blog-Media clichés:
When you make words for a living, you will inevitably find yourself drawn into certain ruts of repetition. That's why you'll see the same tired clichés popping up in the same media outlets, or often in the writing produced by the same people. Blogs are no different, and are in fact worse -- the increased breadth and depth of volume encourages mass overuse of an even longer list of lazy jokes, references, and turns of phrase. The annotated list includes some of my pet peeves (and personal weaknesses): "[x] is the new [y]", "[purposefully non-ghetto statement], yo", and "I'm looking at you, [example of complaint]."Labels: blogging, writing

He could tell you stories that could make you cry: 1. Guy moves to New York. 2. Guy gets dumped. 3. Guy starts dating on Match.com. 4. Guy blogs about it.
I went on a date tonight with this girl. She turned out to be kinda fatter than the photos would suggest and maybe not supersmart, but we had fun.
So, leaving the bar, I was walking just ahead of her through a little narrow section of sidewalk and I hear this crash and - turn round and the fat girl has fallen headfirst into a pile of garbage. Total faceplant, hands outstretched to catch herself.
The two guys outside the bar start cracking up and I was too, so there I am, laughing so hard that I'm coughing, trying to lift this fat girl out of the garbage. All I can say is thank god this didn't happen in August, because I think we both would have started vomiting uncontrollably. If you read for awhile you start to get an idea of why he's still single. And you also hope he stays that way because it's pretty damn funny.Labels: blogging, dating

Fun while it lasted: John McCain doesn't like blogs or free speech:
Senator John McCain (R. - AZ) has introduced legislation [PDF] that would hold blogs responsible for all activity in their comments sections and user profiles. Provisions of the proposed bill include: (1) commercial websites and personal blogs "would be required to report illegal images or videos posted by their users or pay fines of up to $300,000," (2) bloggers with comment sections may face "even stiffer penalties" than ISPs, and (3) any social-networking site must take "effective measures" to remove any Web page that's "associated" with a sex offender. "Because 'social-networking site' isn't defined, it could encompass far more than just MySpace.com, Friendster and similar sites." The list could include any site that allows comments, authot and personal profiles. Kevin Bankston of the Electronic Frontier Foundation notes that this proposal may be based more "on fear or political considerations rather than on the facts." "McCain’s legislation could deal a serious blow to the blogosphere. Lacking resources to police their sites, many individual blogs may have to shut down open discussion." Someone at MetaFilter already summed up my thoughts by writing "Proof yet again that McCain is a stupid fuck."Labels: blogging
